  • Who Can Apply: Ceramic sculptors and sculptors in diverse mediums, emerging to mature, aged 21+ at the deadline. Students in higher education (full- or part-time) are not eligible, and student work is excluded.
  • The Focus: Merit-based grants that give sculptors time to develop their own work. The grant cannot fund continued academic training.
  • The Funding: Three grants each year: $60,000 (1st), $30,000 (2nd), $20,000 (3rd). They support expenses to live, travel and create. $7 application fee.
  • Key Requirements: SlideRoom application with 20 images (up to 5MB, JPG/PNG, no composites), optional video (up to 2, each under 2 minutes), a 250-word artist statement, a 500-word grant purpose statement, CV-style sections, and certification that no AI tools were used.

Application notesApply via SlideRoom ($7 fee). The portfolio requires 20 images (not 'up to 20'), in chronological order from newest to oldest. Use individual images only (no composites). Images may be up to 5MB as JPG or PNG, and descriptions are limited to 50 characters. A strong body of work from the past 5 years is important; a few earlier works may be included. Work made as a student must not be included, or the application is disqualified. Video is optional: the application form allows up to 2 videos, each under 2 minutes. (The website FAQ says to keep any video to 3 minutes; follow the application form.) Written sections: exhibitions/commissions/collections (300 words/2,000 characters), accomplishments (100 words/600 characters), artist statement (250 words), and purpose of the grant (500 words/3,000 characters). Applicants must certify that no images were created with AI tools and grant the Foundation a non-exclusive promotional license to submitted images. Collaborative applications are accepted (mark as such). First-place winners may serve on the jury for 2 years. To change a submitted application, email Nina@VirginiaAGrootFoundation.org.
