  • Who Can Apply: Ceramic artists and visual artists aged 20+ at the time of application, living in Japan or abroad. SCCP expects to select one artist residing in Japan and one residing outside Japan.
  • The Focus: Guest Artist residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, April 1, 2027 – March 31, 2028. Stays run from a minimum of 2 months to less than 1 year. Overseas artists may start only on or after July 1.
  • The Funding: Honorarium up to 200,000 JPY, round-trip travel reimbursed, materials up to 100,000 JPY, and kiln/firing costs up to 110,000 JPY. Accommodation is paid by the artist: 20,300 JPY/month single or 26,400 JPY/month twin.
  • Key Requirements: Online form only. Biography, theme/concept statement, and residency purpose and plan (each max. 400 words). Up to 4 past-work images as JPEG under 2MB. Up to three preferred residency periods. Selected artists donate work and give a public lecture or workshop.

AwardHonorarium up to 200,000 JPY (tax included; paid after SCCP receives the donated work). Also covered: round-trip travel to Shigaraki Station (for overseas residents, the most economical fare from the nearest airport), materials up to 100,000 JPY, and kiln/firing costs up to 110,000 JPY.
Cost to attendAccommodation (paid by the artist): single room 20,300 JPY/month or twin room 26,400 JPY/month (as of August 2026, subject to change). Bedding rental through an introduced supplier, e.g. 6,600 JPY/month. Air-conditioner use is charged extra. Shipping, materials beyond the budget, and other living expenses are the resident's.

Application notesApplication period: September 1, 2026 (10:00 JST) to October 31, 2026 (17:00 JST), online only at https://sccp-air-apply.jp/guest-artist/. Applicants living in Japan and abroad use the same form. To also apply as a Studio Artist, submit a separate application. Residency window: April 1, 2027 – March 31, 2028. Choose a stay of at least 2 months and less than 1 year, and give up to three preferred periods. Artists traveling from outside Japan may start only on or after July 1. The facility closes December 29, 2027 – January 3, 2028, and residents must vacate during that time. The application asks for a biography, theme and concept, and residency purpose and plan (each max. 400 words), plus up to 4 images of major past works. All images must be JPEG under 2MB, with alphanumeric file names. Results are emailed by December 27, 2026. Guest Artists are asked to donate work(s) or technical information, chosen with SCCP staff; large-scale works may be declined. They also give a lecture or workshop for the public. Artists from abroad staying 4 months or longer must enroll in Japanese National Health Insurance.
