Housing: On-campus housing available; options include double/common bath ($275), double/shared bath ($350), single/common bath ($425), single/private bath ($600) for 2 weeks
  • Who Can Apply: Open to artists at any career stage comfortable working independently
  • The Focus: Dedicated studio time for independent creative practice, research, development, or collaborative projects
  • Cost: $500–$1,500 residency fee plus housing ($275–$600 for 2 weeks); limited fellowships available; free weekday lunch
  • Key Requirements: Project proposal, four work samples, CV/résumé, reference contact, preferred session dates

Application notesApplications submitted through SlideRoom. Self-directed residency with no classes, critiques, or required activities. Studio assistants do not provide instruction. Flameworking studio includes gas and torches; lathe access available by request. Hot Shop includes 8-hr/day Monday–Friday access (minus safety orientation and cleanup), use of annealers, torches, hand tools, garage, and 24-hr kiln access. Requests for access to multiple studios within one session considered only when essential to proposed project. Collaborators must each submit individual applications with shared project proposal and same preferred dates; acceptance determined individually. Penland cannot accommodate writers, dancers, or musicians. Arrival Sunday 1–4 PM; departure Friday by 10 AM.
