Details
Housing: Shared 2-bedroom artist apartments (one private bedroom, shared kitchen/living room/bathroom) available for visiting artists from outside the Bay Area; local artists do not receive housing
  • Who Can Apply: Open to artists of all disciplines; visiting artists from outside the San Francisco Bay Area can access housing
  • The Focus: Subsidized residencies supporting artists working in printmaking, photography, book arts, film, video, new media, public art, performance, ceramics, fiber arts, sculpture, and installation
  • Cost: $1,400–$1,700 for 2–3.5 week residency with housing; month/2-month/3-month options without housing available; 20% discount on classes
  • Key Requirements: Familiarity with at least one of Kala's media/equipment (print studio, sculpture/textile lab, digital lab, darkroom); work samples encouraged

Application fee waiver available upon request. Staff provide online and in-person orientations; classes available for artists new to equipment. Returning AIRs welcome without reapplication; email leyla@kala.org 4–6 months in advance.
