  • Who Can Apply: Visual artists 21+ who have lived full-time in North Carolina for a minimum of one year and will continue living in NC during the grant period. Practicing visual artists of all backgrounds and career stages eligible; excludes choreographers, dancers, theatrical performers, filmmakers, musicians, writers, and other non-visual-art disciplines. Not eligible: those enrolled in undergraduate/graduate programs during grant period (unless graduating before start), those awarded Brightwork Fellowship in 2022 or later, or those awarded a Brightwork Grant in 2026.
  • The Focus: Professional Development Grant supports activities that further professional development (workshops, classes, conferences, technical instruction, portfolio documentation, website design, equipment/tools/materials). Studio Project Grant supports studio-based work production (equipment, tools, materials, solo exhibition expenses, research costs).
  • The Funding: Professional Development Grant: $2,000; Studio Project Grant: $3,000. SlideRoom charges a small application fee.
  • Key Requirements: Proposed budget, artist statement, bio, examples of recent work. Professional Development Grant also requires statement of intent. Studio Project Grant also requires project description. Form W9 required if awarded. Receipts required for all grant expenditures.

Application notesApplicants may only apply to one grant per application cycle and must choose between Professional Development Grant or Studio Project Grant. Artists applying for the 2027 Brightwork Fellowship are not eligible to apply for a 2027 Brightwork Grant. Application opens July 10, 2026. Notifications sent in late September. Applicants who do not follow guidelines or meet eligibility requirements will be dismissed without notice.
