Design Trust for Public Space Photo Urbanism Fellowship
- Who Can Apply: Photographers based in New York City, at least 21 years old, legally eligible to work in the US, with 5–7 years of photography experience preferred; full-time students ineligible, part-time students may apply; demonstrated interest in teaching youth/undergraduate students preferred.
- The Focus: Creating a photography project that illuminates public spaces as venues for arts, culture, and community in NYC, particularly in historically marginalized neighborhoods, in response to the Untaped initiative.
- The Funding: $10,000 stipend plus solo exhibition.
- Key Requirements: Portfolio of three representative images from the last three years; project proposal and approach statement (max 300 words) explaining interest in the topic, proposed work, relevance to your practice, and youth/teaching experience; artist statement on photography approach and camera(s) used (max 150 words); one-page resume with education, exhibition history, contact info; image list with title, date, location; at least two professional references with contact info.

Application notesApplications must be submitted to fellowship@designtrust.org by 11:59 pm on September 2, 2026. The fellow must be available to participate in meetings with Design Trust, CUNY Macaulay Honors College, and the Youth Photography Workshop Intensive Teaching Fellow. Fellowship requires a 9-month commitment based on a mutually agreed-upon work plan. Time allocation: 5% administrative tasks, 10% mentorship to young photographers, 85% project development. Deliverables include comprehensive project proposal, final solo exhibition with written description and minimum 5 final images (digital and print), participation as Visiting Critic during Youth Photography Workshop Intensive for 6 CUNY Macaulay Honors College undergraduates, and at least one public program (talk or panel) related to the photography series.
