Kala Art Institute Fellowship Program
Housing: One month of shared artist housing for artists outside the nine Bay Area counties.
- Who Can Apply: Open to international, national, and local artists producing innovative work in and across multiple media.
- The Focus: A residency fellowship supporting the completion of a specific project or body of work that benefits from Kala's specialized printmaking, digital media, ceramics, and weaving equipment.
- The Funding: The artist receives a $3,000 stipend, plus one month of shared housing for artists from outside the nine Bay Area counties, 24/7 studio access for one to nine months, one Kala class or workshop, and a place in the group exhibition.
- Key Requirements: Apply in kala.slideroom.com (opens December 2026) by March 1, 2027 with a statement of interest on how the Fellowship would affect a specific project or your practice, 5 to 10 items documenting recent work, and two references (contact details only, no letters). No fee until January 15, 2027; $25 from January 16 to March 1.

Application notesApply online via SlideRoom; applying is free from December 2026 to January 15, 2027 and costs $25 from January 16 to March 1, 2027. Artist housing consists of two shared two-bedroom apartments across the street from Kala; a $200 non-refundable housing deposit is due within two weeks of confirming dates and is applied toward residency costs or the fellowship stipend. The print studio/digital lab is up 52 steps; contact Ellen or Leyla with access questions. Project spaces and housing are available for artists coming from outside the San Francisco Bay Area.
