  • Who Can Apply: An apprentice and a recognized master artist pairing in a traditional Alaska Native art form; the apprentice works with the master artist to prepare and submit the application.
  • The Focus: One-on-one study that preserves and perpetuates traditional Alaska Native art forms, including visual arts, traditional crafts, music, dance, storytelling, song, and functional objects.
  • The Funding: Grant funds underwrite the study; the majority are assigned to the Master artist's fee and the apprentice is not paid.
  • Key Requirements: Provide the joint application with support materials — artist's name, work title (if applicable), description of materials used, and completion date — plus final grant reporting by the apprentice.
DeadlineTuesday, December 1, 2026
AwardAny amount may be requested, but grants usually do not exceed $2,000. Funds pay the Master Artist's fee, partly offset raw-material costs and cover travel essential to the apprenticeship. The apprentice is not paid. No match is required.

Application notesApplication is prepared jointly by the apprentice and the Master Artist, with the apprentice responsible for submitting and for final grant reporting. Support materials must include the artist's name, the title of the piece (if applicable), a description including the materials used, and the date the work was completed; support materials not uploaded electronically must be postmarked by the posted grant deadline. Immediate-family study is generally not funded through ASCA public arts funds, though an application may be considered where the skill is traditionally transferred exclusively within a family or the art form is endangered (immediate family defined as spouse, sibling, or blood relation through second degree of kinship, or a regular household member).
