  • Who Can Apply: Artists of all career levels, from emerging to professional, who are over 18, are legally authorized to work in the United States (or will obtain the necessary visas and work permits if selected), and have a website, social media account or shared folder showing more of their work. Local and international artists may register; individuals and groups/collaboratives submit separately.
  • The Focus: Registration in the Artist Directory that NYC's Department of Cultural Affairs uses to research and consider artists for Percent for Art commissions: permanent, site-specific public artworks in new or reconstructed City-owned buildings and structures across the five boroughs.
  • Compensation: No payment for registering and no fee to join. Commissions are funded per project under the Percent for Art law (one percent of eligible City-funded construction budgets); budgets are not stated on the Directory pages, and inclusion does not guarantee being asked to submit a proposal.
  • Key Requirements: Download and complete the Artist Directory Form (Word or PDF) with contact information, an artist statement (max. 550 characters), an artist bio (max. 550 characters) and details for each image; email it to PercentInfo@culture.nyc.gov with the subject line 'Artist Directory Application: [Last name], [First name]' and include a file-sharing link to 10-15 JPEG images (minimum 1024 x 768 px). Incomplete submissions are not included in the Directory.

Application notesApply by email: download the Artist Directory Form, save it as [LAST NAME]_[First name]_Artist Directory in Word or PDF, and email it to PercentInfo@culture.nyc.gov with the subject 'Artist Directory Application: [Last name], [First name]'. Put a file-sharing link (WeTransfer, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.) to 10-15 JPEG images in the body of the email. There are no deadlines; the Directory is updated on an ongoing basis, a confirmation email is sent on intake, and staff review each submission. Individuals and groups/collaboratives must create separate submissions. Non-visual artists should provide visual representations of their work (book cover, author photo, performance photo). To be considered for a specific project, email the project name in the subject line with a brief statement of interest. Inclusion in the Directory does not guarantee an artist will be selected to submit a proposal; artists are selected through a panel process.
