Performing Artist-In-Residence Program — Museum of Chinese in America
  • Who Can Apply: Performing artists (dance, music, theatre, performance art, spoken word, film) who self-identify as Asian/Chinese American or Asian/Chinese immigrant, are 25 or older, not enrolled in a degree program, and reside in the New York City metropolitan area.
  • The Focus: Developing a new, original performing-arts project inspired by or directly engaging MOCA's archive and collections, with the 2026–2027 theme of 'Implied Selves' (identity, self-presentation, and gender expression).
  • The Funding: $3,000 honorarium per artist; access to rehearsal spaces, archives, and collections; staff consultation; and additional financial support for presentations.
  • Key Requirements: Artist statement (250 words), cultural statement (250 words), project statement (400 words), workshop leader proposal (three 150-word sections), CV/résumé, and work samples (up to 5 images, 3 songs ≤3 min each, 10 min of show recording, or 10 pages of writing).

Application notesApplicants must be available for all required dates including workshops (week of November 16, 2026), internal peer review (week of February 15, 2027), and public presentation (week of March 8, 2027). Monthly check-in sessions with director of performance, storytelling & community required. New project must be original, previously unpresented, and engage with MOCA's archive either as inspiration or through direct use of archival materials.
