American Academy in Rome – Rome Prize Fellowship

- Who Can Apply: US citizens for most categories, including visual arts (visual arts applicants need at least three years of professional commitment); US citizens and foreign nationals with three years' US residency may apply in Environmental Arts & Humanities and postdoctoral Italian studies. Previous winners and undergraduate students are ineligible.
- The Focus: A residential fellowship at the American Academy in Rome (half-term or full-term, generally September to June) for about thirty artists and scholars pursuing innovative, cross-disciplinary work; visual arts covers painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, film/video, installation, new media and digital arts.
- The Funding: $16,000 (half-term) or $30,000 (full-term) stipend, bedroom with private bath, private workspace and weekday lunch and dinner. Application fee $50 by November 1 or $80 November 2–15 (more for multiple categories).
- Key Requirements: Visual arts: online application with a current CV, a one-page proposal, three references (no letters required) and work samples — up to 18 JPEG images (minimum 1240 pixels on the longest side, max 10 MB each) or up to three video samples totalling no more than ten minutes. All materials in English.

Application notesEarly deadline November 1 ($50 for one application, $60 for two or more); applications November 2–15 cost $80 ($90 for two or more). The portal closes at 11:59 PM PST on November 15; mailed materials must be postmarked by November 15. Letters of recommendation (where required) are due November 30; visual arts, literature and musical composition applicants give three references instead. A separate application is required for each category. Online information sessions: September 30 and October 22, 5:00PM ET. Finalists interview in February or March; winners announced in April.
