Photographer in Residence Open Call 2027
- Who Can Apply: Photographers and photography-based artists with previous independent darkroom experience. Applicants cannot be currently enrolled in an art-related degree program or planning to attend one in the coming year. Applicants outside NYC may apply, but non-U.S. citizens need valid work authorization or residency status at the time of the residency.
- The Focus: Creating a site-specific body of analog photography while embedded in an NYC community or place, with access to a professional mobile darkroom and professional development.
- The Funding: $1,500 artist stipend; four weeks of exclusive Airstream darkroom access; darkroom chemistry, film, and photo paper; two scanning and digital-printing workshops; press packet support.
- Key Requirements: Resume; artist bio under 200 words; responses about independent darkroom experience, proposed work, site connection, and preferred residency months; and up to five portfolio images with title, year, and format metadata.

Application notesResidents must commit at least 20 hours per week in the Airstream. During the residency, each artist creates 20 images: 10 original photographs and 10 documentation images showing the artist at work, the Airstream in use, and its surroundings. Finalists are notified and interviewed virtually in October 2026; selected residents are confirmed in December 2026. Applicants outside NYC may apply, but WORTHLESSSTUDIOS does not provide housing, travel, or visa support. Stipends and honoraria are reported to the IRS.
